im a painting major at VCU and i recently became very intrigued by cymatics. there is a grant program here at VCU that offers students wanting to explore ideas the money to go and do so. i would be pumped if i could receive a grant to explore cymatics and hopefully find a way to add to the growing body of artwork it has helped create. i was hoping someone could offer some possible insight or advice as to how i can structure my application in a way to receive the grant and then how to accomplish adding to, instead of repeating, the language that cymatics has created within the art field.
I am not sure how to advise you on structuring a grant; however I can suggest that you gather together the research and documentation on cymatics that is out there now, including pulling together data on the people who are leading the cymatics research and experiments (including art projects) today.
Look up John Stuart Reid, Alexander Lauterwasser, Erik Larson and Jeff Volk (who publishes Cymatics by Hans Jenny and Water Sound Images by Lauterwasser) and find out what is being done and the history behind cymatics; then, you should be able to present a good body of literature resources that you could use in your studies.
As far as art and cymatics, look up art and cymatics online, to get an idea of what has already been done (it is very limited now so you have a wide-open field really) and then design a project that is different than what is out there already. Once you have done that, I would be more than glad to help you out more with any advice or resources you need to make your project successful.
I hope that you go after this; it is great to see some students working on cymatics projects in school (I have had contact with a few others around the world). I am planning to add more to this site as well (for example interviews with cymatics researchers) that will hopefully be of help to you in your studies.
Best of luck and please do let me know how you are coming along on this.
